R&D Mechanical Engineer
Marvel Fusion · Munich, Bavaria
Who we are
Founded in 2019, Marvel Fusion is Europe’s leading fusion energy company, uniting 120 scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs across our locations in Munich and Colorado .
Backed by over €385 million in public and private funding, we’re driven by a shared mission: to deliver clean, abundant energy to the world.
Why Marvel Fusion
By joining us, you will be:
- Solving one of the most complex technological challenges known to humanity, harnessing Fusion on Earth
- Part of a highly purpose-driven team working on providing the world with clean, safe and abundant energy
- Working alongside world-leading scientists and entrepreneurs in the field of Fusion
- Part of a start-up where growth on a company and individual level is the default
The impact you will make
As a Mechanical Engineer – Precision Devices & Manufacturing, you will contribute the mechanical design and realization of high-precision devices, machinery, mechanisms and tooling for advanced laser and fusion technology. Your work will cover the full development cycle: requirements, concept design, detailed engineering, prototyping, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, testing, installation and commissioning.
You will translate demanding functional and dimensional requirements into robust, repeatable and manufacturable designs. Your core focus will be precision mechanical engineering, with particular value placed on experience developing molds, dies, tooling and other tight-tolerance manufactured devices.
Your responsibilities
- Design precision mechanical devices, machines, mechanisms, tooling, molds, fixtures, positioning assemblies and alignment equipment, from initial concepts through detailed, production-ready designs.
- Define critical dimensions, datum strategies, fits, tolerance stacks, surface finishes, material choices, stiffness and thermal stability requirements; evaluate mechanical interfaces, assembly sequences, serviceability and production repeatability.
- Produce and release complete engineering packages: 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings, GD&T, bills of materials, inspection requirements and technical specifications; conduct design reviews and apply DFM/DFA principles.
- Own the technical manufacturing interface from prototype to finished parts: select suitable processes such as CNC milling and turning, grinding, EDM, precision finishing and heat treatment; work with suppliers on feasibility, quotations, fabrication, first-article inspection and nonconformities.
- Plan and support precision fitting, assembly, adjustment and alignment; verify dimensions and functional performance, resolve build issues, and lead or support installation, acceptance testing, commissioning and technical handover.
- Install, integrate and commission cooling-water circuits for precision machinery and experimental equipment, including piping, hoses, fittings, valves, manifolds and leak/pressure testing.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience designing precision machinery, manufactured devices, complex mechanisms or tooling, with accountability for producing drawings and delivering functional hardware.
- Deep understanding of precision manufacturing, machining and tooling methods, material behavior, fits, GD&T, surface finishes, tolerance chains and dimensional verification.
- Strong CAD and drawing capability, including manufacturing-ready documentation, BOMs, tolerance analysis and clear technical communication with machinists, toolmakers, metrology teams and suppliers.
- Hands-on experience across the complete hardware development cycle, including prototypes, supplier follow-up, inspection, precision assembly, functional testing and commissioning.
- Practical experience installing cooling circuits and working knowledge of piping systems, fluid components and instrumentation, including flow, pressure and temperature sensors.
What sets you apart
- Previous experience in mold design and manufacturing, injection molds, forming dies, precision toolmaking or comparable tight-tolerance machinery is strongly preferred.
- Experience with precision positioning mechanisms, custom machines, scientific instrumentation, optomechanical devices or automated precision assemblies.
- Experience specifying and interpreting CMM reports, geometric tolerances, surface roughness measurements, inspection plans and precision assembly or alignment procedures.
- Proven ability to work directly with machine shops and toolmakers, resolve manufacturing deviations, optimize parts for production, and lead build-to-test iterations.
- Strong ownership, practical problem-solving skills and a design-for-manufacture mindset, with the ability to turn complex designs into reliable, accurately manufactured and assembled devices.
- Experience selecting, integrating and troubleshooting fluid sensors, flow meters, pressure transducers, temperature sensors and associated piping hardware in laboratory or industrial cooling systems.
